Did you know that the right lipstick can make your teeth look whiter? Find the perfect shade to brighten your smile.

Wearing lipstick can feel like an almost magical experience at times. But did you know that the color of your lipstick can improve your smile? The right lipstick can make your teeth appear whiter while the wrong shade can accentuate the yellow in your teeth. For special occasions, make sure you select the right shade to brighten your smile.

How Does Lipstick Make Your Teeth Look Whiter?

The key is in your makeup’s undertones. Makeup colors are based on the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. Blue hues tend to cancel out the yellow and accentuate the white. Warm red or yellow undertones, by contrast, will exaggerate the yellow in your teeth. So when shopping for lipstick, try to select shades that have a cool blue undertone.

Luckily, a blue undertone doesn’t mean that the lipstick itself is blue. In fact, red lipsticks that create the brightest smiles all have cool blue undertones. There are lipsticks for every style and budget that can help your teeth look whiter. For your convenience, we’ve done picked out eight popular and effective shades:

What if Lipstick Isn’t Enough?

While the right lipstick can certainly brighten your smile, makeup can only do so much. Luckily, whitening your teeth is an easy process that can leave you feeling happier and more confident.

The Tooth Whitening Process

You have two types of options for whiter teeth, in-office treatments and at-home treatments. An in-office procedure typically takes just a couple hours and leaves you with immediate results. In-office tooth bleaching uses higher concentrations of bleaching solution, and the time frame is significantly shorter. You can expect your teeth to look four to six shades lighter after a single session of only a couple hours.

Alternatively, you may prefer at-home treatments, which take longer but can be just as effective. At-home whitening kits are prescribed by dentists. First, the dentist makes molds of your upper and lower teeth in order to design a customized mouth tray. The mold typically takes around two weeks to create. Once you receive your tray, you will be able to apply bleaching gel to your teeth for an hour a day for up to two weeks. At-home bleaching solutions are less concentrated than in-office treatments, so you can safely keep them on for a longer length of time.
