A new set of dentures can restore your smile. But it will take time to adjust to your new set of teeth.
Whether partial or full, dentures replace missing teeth and restore your smile. But even with all their advantages, dentures still require time to get accustomed to using them.
In the days immediately after the tooth extraction and denture placement, you can expect minor pain and swelling as your gums become accustomed to the new device. Although you may feel tempted to remove the dentures to relieve the discomfort, you should keep them in continuously for 24 hours. Removing them could increase the swelling. Any bleeding should be minimal, and with some patience and minor lifestyle adjustments, your dentures can soon feel like your natural teeth.
Six tips to help you adjust to your new dentures
Your dentures will feel more comfortable as you wear them over the next few weeks, but you can make this transition period more pleasant with these six tips:
Eat Soft Foods. Avoid hard, crunchy foods such as apples and carrots. Biting on such foods will only cause more discomfort. Switch to soft foods such as bananas and yogurt that are easy to chew. You can also consider pureeing vegetables and fruits, cutting the food into small pieces, and chewing gently. Be mindful of the food’s temperature, as too-hot or cold foods may aggravate sensitive gums.
Apply a Cold Compress. A cold compress can reduce pain and swelling when applied to the jaw. Keep the compress on for about 15 minutes.
Practice Speaking. Speaking with a new set of dentures in your mouth can feel uncomfortable, and you may think you’re not enunciating clearly. To feel less self-conscious, read a book aloud or talk to a close friend who can give you positive feedback. Before you speak, make sure to position the dentures correctly. You can also try singing along to your favorite tune to practice articulating words with your dentures.
Exercise Your Facial Muscles. Your cheek and facial muscles help you chew and swallow your food, so it’s important to exercise and strengthen those muscles. Stronger muscles will assist your mouth in chewing food with the new dentures.
Find the Right Adhesive. There are various denture adhesive products on the market. Adhesives not only make the dentures fit better, but they can also reduce irritation. With the right one, you can speak and eat with confidence.
Keep Up with Your Dental Appointments. Don’t miss any follow-up appointments with your dentist! Your dentist can ensure your dentures fit correctly and determine if any adjustments are needed as your gums shift over time. You can also tell your dentist if you are experiencing any significant pain or swelling.
Getting accustomed to your dentures will take time, so be patient! You’ll soon feel comfortable with your dentures as you get your great smile (and confidence) back.
