Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients who:

  • Experience dental anxiety or have past trauma
  • Have sensitive teeth or gums
  • Have a low pain tolerance
  • Need to undergo multiple procedures during one appointment
  • Have a strong gag reflex that makes dental visits challenging

Our team, including Dr. Greg Stewart, a native of Northwest OKC, works closely with each patient to determine the right level of sedation for their comfort. Dr. Stewart is known for his compassionate approach to dentistry. He is also fluent in Spanish and welcomes Spanish-speaking dental patients as well. He often helps patients who have delayed care due to fear or hesitation, and he's passionate about restoring their smiles in the most comfortable way possible.

What Sedation Options Are Available at Espire Dental | OKC?

Sedation dentistry helps reduce anxiety, discomfort, and stress during dental procedures. It allows patients to remain calm, with some types of sedation leaving them fully awake but relaxed, while others help induce more drowsiness. At Espire Dental, we offer two types of sedation for our patients:

  1. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)This mild sedation, commonly known as laughing gas, is administered through a small mask over your nose. It helps you feel relaxed and calm within minutes. Nitrous oxide is excellent for shorter procedures or patients with mild dental anxiety. Plus, it wears off quickly, allowing you to return to your day without lingering drowsiness.
  2. Oral Sedation
If you need a deeper level of relaxation, oral sedation may be a good fit. You'll take a prescribed medication before your appointment, providing a significant sense of ease during your visit. While you remain awake, you'll feel deeply calm and peaceful. For safety, patients who choose oral sedation will need a companion to drive them to and from the appointment.

At Espire Dental OKC, our team has extensive experience providing sedation dentistry, and they're experts in ensuring your comfort and safety. We will carefully monitor you throughout the process, ensuring a smooth, safe, and relaxing experience. Our nitrous oxide and oral sedation methods are excellent options to help patients through even the most complex dental work.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes! Sedation dentistry is very safe when administered by trained professionals. We carefully monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure to ensure comfort and safety.

Will I be asleep during the procedure?

With nitrous oxide and oral sedation, you won't be asleep but will feel relaxed and less aware of your surroundings. You'll remain responsive, but many patients don't remember the procedure afterward.

How long does the sedation last?

Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes after your mask is removed. Oral sedation may last a few hours after the procedure. You'll need a ride home if you choose oral sedation.

How will I feel after the sedation?

Most patients feel relaxed and a little tired after sedation. For nitrous oxide, the effects wear off quickly. For oral sedation, finding someone to drive you home is essential.

Is sedation dentistry covered by insurance?

Coverage varies, so we recommend contacting your insurance provider for the most direct answer. Our team can also assist you with verifying coverage and payment options. Please contact our office.

What should I expect after sedation?

Patients generally feel calm and relaxed. With nitrous oxide, you can return to your regular activities almost immediately. For oral sedation, you'll likely feel groggy for a few hours and should rest for the remainder of the day.
