DENTAL CROWNS FOR SAN DIEGO, CA

For teeth that are badly damaged, dental crowns can be an effective treatment option. The dental crown procedure utilizes tooth-shaped coverings made of ceramic or porcelain to restore strength and eliminate discomfort. In addition, dental crowns may be used to anchor a dental bridge or to cap a dental implant post.

Dental crowns are made of metal, ceramic, or porcelain fused to metal. The type of dental crown material utilized during your dental crown procedure will depend on your unique needs and goals as well as the recommendation of La Mesa cosmetic dentists, Dr. Jeff Gray and Dr. Hurtado.

Types of Dental Crowns

Metal Dental Crowns. The metallic shine makes a metal crown a poor choice for highly visible teeth, but metal dental crowns can be an ideal option for repairing decayed or damaged teeth in the back of your mouth. These extremely durable restorations can be applied with less enamel removal than when placing ceramic or porcelain crowns. Metal dental crowns may consist of gold alloy, palladium, nickel alloy, or chromium alloy.

All Ceramic Dental Crowns (Porcelain Crowns) Ceramic crowns may be made of porcelain, resins, or dental ceramic materials. This type of crown creates an extremely natural-looking appearance, making them ideal for front teeth. Tooth-colored ceramic is translucent, like the enamel of your natural teeth. The shade can be matched to complement the rest of your smile. For your convenience, we are proud to offer one-visit CEREC ceramic crowns!

Porcelain Crowns (Porcelain Fused to Metal) These crowns are stronger than all-ceramic versions and much more aesthetically pleasing than metal ones. The metal shell does give these crowns an opaque appearance. Because they lack the translucent quality that makes tooth enamel so beautiful, this type of crown is not as discreet as ceramic and porcelain crowns.

THE DENTAL CROWN PROCEDURE

The dental crown procedure is typically completed in two stages. Your dentist will remove portions of your natural tooth’s structure to make a well-fitting crown. An impression will be sent to the lab. This lab will be create your new crown in about two weeks. A temporary dental crown will help you chew and speak normally while you wait for your new permanent crown.

When you return to our office in La Mesa, the temporary crown will be removed, and your custom dental crown will be securely bonded in place to create a new smile.
