Veneers and dental implants are both excellent restorative options. But which one is right for you?
Not too long ago, the only alternatives to replace missing or severely damaged teeth were bulky dentures or bridges. Yet, for all their advantages, dentures can be uncomfortable and sometimes even dislodge from the gums. Thankfully, you have a choice today between veneers and dental implants to restore your smile and give you a full set of teeth.
Whether veneers or dental implants are more suitable for you depends on the severity of your tooth damage as well as your budget. At Espire, we have years of experience with both veneers and dental implants and can recommend the best solution for you after a thorough examination of your teeth.
Veneers vs. Dental Implants
Generally speaking, veneers are better suited for minor dental upgrades, such as fixing chipped or discolored teeth. Gaps between teeth can also be repaired with veneers. Most of your natural tooth remains as the dentist removes a minimal amount of enamel before applying either a porcelain coating or a composite resin. The veneer is matched to your tooth color and shaped to fit the alignment of your teeth.
For dental implants, the dentist will extract the entire tooth if it’s severely decayed or damaged. Once the tooth is removed, a titanium post is inserted into the jawbone. The post, in a sense, takes the place of the tooth root.
In about six to 12 weeks, the post bonds with the jawbone. Another post, called an abutment, is then attached to the titanium post and a new tooth is screwed into place. The shape of the implant is created from a mold of your mouth. The implant looks and acts like your normal teeth, so you don’t have to worry about dentures slipping out during inopportune moments.
Your jawbone must be strong enough to hold the implant. If it isn’t, your dentist can perform a bone graft procedure to ensure your jaw will accept the implant.
Both veneers and implants can restore one or several teeth. Some people have implants so a dental bridge can attach more securely to the implants.
So, Which One is Better?
Both dental implants and veneers have been used safely and successfully for decades to replace broken or missing teeth. However, they each have their own pros and cons that you may want to consider along with your overall oral health and dental issues:
Time Commitment. Veneers can be applied in one or two appointments. Dental implants can take months from start to finish.
Durability. Dental implants are virtually permanent, lasting many decades without needing replacement. Depending on the material used, veneers can last up to 15 years at most. If the veneer is damaged, you’ll have to replace it.
Price. Veneers are cheaper than dental implants. But if damaged, you will need replacements, and those costs can add up. Meanwhile, dental implants are expensive and may not be covered by insurance. But once implants are placed, you won’t need a replacement unless the implant is damaged for some reason.
Maintenance. Here’s where veneers and dental implants are the same: Both require regular care (brushing, flossing, rinsing) and twice-yearly checkups to maintain mint condition.
